Louise Newton – Community Outreach Director
J. Louise Newton holds a Bachelors of Arts in with a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Louise also holds a Masters in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a clinical social worker providing individual, family, and group therapy through the the UNC Medical School at a program for women and children. She is a field instructor for the UNC Chapel Hill, School of Social Work Graduate program and the Shaw University Bachelor’s of Social Work program. Louise has worked in paid labor settings since 2003 offering gender-responsive treatment services as alternatives to imprisonment, in trauma recovery programming, and now to families in residential treatment. Concurrently, Louise has been a community organizer since 2000 co-founding and working with organizations towards gender equity and LGBTQI visibility and acceptance. In addition, Louise is a state-wide consultant to institutions educating medical providers on the needs of LGBTQI community members. She co-founded two youth-run showspaces in Asheville, North Carolina, promoting local and touring musicians. Louise is a vocalist and has recorded and toured in Asheville-based feminist punk and metal bands and currently sings for Janzig, a local all-lady metal band. Louise is a Durham native and an unapologetic feminist. This will be her third summer as Girls Rock NC staff and has learned more about girls’ and women’s empowerment from the campers than anything you can read in a book.
